Upon meeting as members of the Augsburg University baseball team, we quickly discovered our shared passion of rock n roll. Roommates throughout college, Luke and Clint began jamming together just for the fun of it. After moving out of the dorms, we eventually invited teammate Lance to join us upon learning of his guitar playing. As a now trio of self-taught musicians with nobody telling them not to play, the rest is history. With Clint and Lance having “Rock Fathers” in bands most of their lives, the decision to form a band came rather quickly. Living room jams in college dorms and houses eventually became organized rehearsals in any open room we could find. After refining the handful of songs our trio had been fine tuning over the previous 3 years, we realized we needed a drummer. Enter Scott Mattson, the human metronome. With a shared love of Rock N Roll and high volume, each member of the Turnups brings something entirely different to the table. Whether it be a funky Doobie Brothers song, or a gritty Alice in Chains anthem, we give it everything we’ve got. At a Turnups show, you can expect a good, loud, rock show from a young, hungry band that is eager to prove themselves and share their passion with the world.

My Story:

I was gifted a guitar when I was 7 or 8 year sold, but it sat around for years before I started playing. I started to really discover and fall in love with music during 8th grade when I started listening to music on the school bus. I remember waking up one day and just wanted to play bass and that was that. I started with the bass, but after about 6 months I transitioned to guitar. From then on out, I haven’t stopped playing.

First Music Memory:

Listening to the “Back in Black” album on the way to The Groove gigs in Dad’s truck. Still my favorite album ever.

My Story:

I was gifted a mini drum set for Christmas when I was 8-10 years old, and as I got older my dad let me set his kit up and play in the shed. I love drumming, but my favorite music to play is a workout (sorry Dad!). I always wanted to play guitar, but learning how intimidated me as a kid. I was randomly gifted a bass on my 16th birthday, and fell in love with it. I’ve been playing anything I can get my hands on ever since.

Musical Influences:

I’m kind of all over the place. The Stones, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, Social Distortion, Foo Fighters.

Playing Influences:

Charlie Watts, Phil Ehart, Matt Cameron, John Bonham

First Music Memory:

One of my first memories is going to my grandparents house when Grandpa was having “Jam Sessions” with fellow local musicians. I always thought that was so cool.

My Story:

My Mom’s family is very musical. My Grandpa played in several bands, and my Mom would play with them too. I started playing saxophone in elementary school, but switched to drums in middle school. I thought it was cooler (and chicks dig drummers, HA!). I’ve been drumming ever since.
